Dealing with lawyers…and contracts

A good buddy of mine was in conversation with attorneys about a contract that was heavily in favor of the company he was doing business with. We discussed how to approach the contract and what to say when talking to the attorneys. Find out where we came out…see my comment!

How to create engaging conversations…listening and improv

How many times do you have the same conversations with colleagues and co-workers and get nowhere? How many times do you hear the same industry buzz words? It’s almost like you hear the same thing over and over again from many people. Everybody starts to sound the same. The key to creating conversations is to practice the skill of improvisation…see my comment for more

Doing business while on the road

I’ve been traveling a bit lately and have a wealth of tools at my disposal. This is a great way to keep business moving. It also keeps me productive while out of the office.

For me, it took me a while before I got my SmartPhone PDA. I was very resistant because I didn’t want to be tied to technology at all times. When it came time to take a two week vacation, I had to make the move. And, it was a good decision. I was able to keep track of ongoing projects, respond to clients and also enjoy my vacation. I returned to the office refreshed and I even closed a couple of deals while I was gone.

Let me know your experience with the virtual office…

Inertia has set in…

I was sitting in a meeting today discussing a new project. The meeting lasted a good hour and a half. At the end of the meeting, we had clear information on the project, a deadline and a general sense that we were all on the same page. This is not how all meetings go. I’ve been in many meetings that go no where, create confusion and you are left where you began–in other words an experience of inertia. See my comment (following) for more…

Free is not always good

Could you imagine going to 3-4 attorneys or accountants and asking them to give you advice (let’s say for the sake of argument 10-15 hours each), but you only pay for the advice you like from one of them? Sound ludicrous? Well, it’s happening more and more with creative services…an outcome of the bad economy.

Last month I heard that Direct TV was bidding out their latest TV ad instead of using their agency. They created a competition for other video professionals and agencies to create an ad that they provided information about for entry into a competition. In the business we call this kind of request a request for “spec” work. the problem with spec work is that you ask people to do a lot of work, but don’t guarantee the business to them. See my comments for more on this…

The value of genuine working relationships

Do you work with freelancers, other companies who provide services to you? What about your own staff? What kind of relationships do you have with them? Are they the kind of people you enjoy working with? As I’ve matured, I’ve learned that working with good people can be the difference between a job and a fantastic work experience.  SEE my Comment for more…

Recession getting you down? Here’s how to beat the depression of recession..

All you hear these days is news about the doom and gloom of the recession. You turn on the TV, you talk to colleagues, friends and family–it’s the topic on everyone’s mind. In some way, it’s like a disease and a self-fulfilling prophecy for depression.

Here are some ways to move beyond the doom and gloom! (see comment)

Web 4.0 and Web 5.0 . . . what’s next?

OK, so we’ve heard of web 2.0, the world of user-generated content…now web 3.0 search on steroids. So, what’s next?! You know how I feel about buzz, well, Seth Godin and others talk about Web 4.0. Intelligent machines telling us what to do and when…keeping track of our every move and making sure we are acting on them (see http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2007/01/web4.html). I think I’m about to lose my lunch! Will you guys please shut up!!

Can they sit still for a minute? Unfortunately, anyone who is that intense may find themselves in ICU after the insertion of numberous stents or worse…

Well, I think it’s my turn to set loose a definition of Web 5.0. (select the comment link below for my definition of Web 5.0)
