Free is not always good

Could you imagine going to 3-4 attorneys or accountants and asking them to give you advice (let’s say for the sake of argument 10-15 hours each), but you only pay for the advice you like from one of them? Sound ludicrous? Well, it’s happening more and more with creative services…an outcome of the bad economy.

Last month I heard that Direct TV was bidding out their latest TV ad instead of using their agency. They created a competition for other video professionals and agencies to create an ad that they provided information about for entry into a competition. In the business we call this kind of request a request for “spec” work. the problem with spec work is that you ask people to do a lot of work, but don’t guarantee the business to them. The value of genuine working relationships

Do you work with freelancers, other companies who provide services to you? What about your own staff? What kind of relationships do you have with them? Are they the kind of people you enjoy working with? As I’ve matured, I’ve learned that working with good people can be the difference between a job and a fantastic work experience.  SEE my Comment for more…

Recession getting you down? Here’s how to beat the depression of recession..

All you hear these days is news about the doom and gloom of the recession. You turn on the TV, you talk to colleagues, friends and family–it’s the topic on everyone’s mind. In some way, it’s like a disease and a self-fulfilling prophecy for depression.

Here are some ways to move beyond the doom and gloom! (see comment)

Web 4.0 and Web 5.0 . . . what’s next?

OK, so we’ve heard of web 2.0, the world of user-generated content…now web 3.0 search on steroids. So, what’s next?! You know how I feel about buzz, well, Seth Godin and others talk about Web 4.0. Intelligent machines telling us what to do and when…keeping track of our every move and making sure we are acting on them (see http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2007/01/web4.html). I think I’m about to lose my lunch! Will you guys please shut up!!

Can they sit still for a minute? Unfortunately, anyone who is that intense may find themselves in ICU after the insertion of numberous stents or worse…

Well, I think it’s my turn to set loose a definition of Web 5.0. (select the comment link below for my definition of Web 5.0)

Buzzwords . . . are they really necessary?

The internet sprung from the military in the 70s. Acronyms, code words and their own language have made it into corporate culture and it follows that buzzwords are part of the internet culture. Web 2.0, the Cloud, Social Shaping, etc. My common joke with friends is about the up and coming Web 5.0–which is face-to-face communication. Can’t beat it!  more on Buzzwords…

Growth with SEO…an organic approach

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the big buzz these days…and many are taking advantage of this buzz. Unfortunately, many are trying to “fool” Google and other search engines. Good SEO strategies are natural extensions of good communications; if you get caught, you can get black listed

The Trouble with Email

Email can be a great way to communicate if used appropriately. It can also be a disaster. Unlike person-to-person communication, it can be misinterpreted, and read into with other meaning and intention.  Read my comment for more…

The Zen of Driving Slower

I’ve been reading up a bit on how to save gas by driving more efficiently (see http://www.cleanmpg.com/), for the obvious reasons. One other reason was to confirm what I already knew. Driving less agressively wastes gas. In addition to saving gas–which is top of mind these days–it helps keep you focused. We often scramble around from one thing to another. Slowing down forces us to think things through, be measured, cool and calm when we often need to be.
