The Zen of Driving Slower

I’ve been reading up a bit on how to save gas by driving more efficiently (see http://www.cleanmpg.com/), for the obvious reasons. One other reason was to confirm what I already knew. Driving less agressively wastes gas. In addition to saving gas–which is top of mind these days–it helps keep you focused. We often scramble around from one thing to another. Slowing down forces us to think things through, be measured, cool and calm when we often need to be.

I often find that during a stressful situation people move quickly…shooting off emails, making phone calls, without having all of the information at hand. and making a lot of assumptions. This is how some situations just ball up and start rolling downhill. I find that stepping back is very helpful during these times.

Picking up the phone, reaching out to colleagues who may be able to put things into perspective can make a huge difference in how you proceed.

Most importantly….LISTEN. When you are moving at the speed of light, you don’t make time to digest what colleagues are telling you or to think strategically. Listening also forces you to slow down and get the full picture.
