The internet sprung from the military in the 70s. Acronyms, code words and their own language have made it into corporate culture and it follows that buzzwords are part of the internet culture. Web 2.0, the Cloud, Social Shaping, etc. My common joke with friends is about the up and coming Web 5.0–which is face-to-face communication. Can’t beat it! more on Buzzwords…

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the big buzz these days…and many are taking advantage of this buzz. Unfortunately, many are trying to “fool” Google and other search engines. Good SEO strategies are natural extensions of good communications; if you get caught, you can get black listed…

Email can be a great way to communicate if used appropriately. It can also be a disaster. Unlike person-to-person communication, it can be misinterpreted, and read into with other meaning and intention. Read my comment for more…
The Zen of Driving Slower

I’ve been reading up a bit on how to save gas by driving more efficiently (see http://www.cleanmpg.com/), for the obvious reasons. One other reason was to confirm what I already knew. Driving less agressively wastes gas. In addition to saving gas–which is top of mind these days–it helps keep you focused. We often scramble around from one thing to another. Slowing down forces us to think things through, be measured, cool and calm when we often need to be.

Building concensus while working in groups can be difficult–especially when you have members of your team or clients who contradict or dismiss what others are saying; or dominate the meetings so no one else gets a word in otherwise. Group dynamics are a funny thing. Once you open up a meeting for discussion, the personalities kick into high gear–and often not in a positive manner. Working Slower to Get Ahead

Everybody wants things done fast. The Internet and our culture of instantaneous gratification has put our patience on hold. What’s the impact of this on work culture? Well, it creates an environment that says quicker is better. Is it? I believe that the quality of our work and relationships has been degraded because of this thinking.
Have you had any of the following experiences?
- You sent an email out too fast that has gotten you into trouble
- You hurt a relationship because you made assumptions about what someone was saying (did you not stop to think before speaking?)
- Something got past you that should have been reviewed before going out
- A quick decision ended up being a bad decision
- You find you are not productive, but are doing a lot
- Your team’s work is NOT at a quality level that you would like it to be
What do you think would happen if you slowed down and paid attention more? I think you’d get more done (more to come)…Post your responses…
How Healthy are our Work Habits?

In parts of Europe, workers take a break in the middle of the day to spend time with their families, eat and nap. Statistically, they are happier than their counterparts in the U.S. What is the true health impact of how we structure our work life. And, what about the “power nap” and other energizing activities? Send along your thoughts.

I’ve been part of the creation of many endeavors, from projects, to businesses, to community-based organizations. I’ve had the pleasure of looking at the world from a different vantage point on many occasions and I started this blog to bring different views and hopefully encourage others to share theirs. I’m dedicated to giving to those who are open to receiving what I’ve learned and exploring ways of creating new forms of thinking, doing and being in the world…with a focus on the culture of work. I welcome your thoughts and comments.
